Stories that inspire the hire
Short answer: A short, true story helps a family see themselves in someone who got through the same situation, and it shows you care before you ask for anything. Keep it specific and kind, protect the family's privacy, and make the letter or video easy to act on. People call when they need you.
Why do stories work?
People call you when they need you most, not before. When you send letters, think more about the phone call that comes in later than about writing the perfect letter. A story helps people feel understood so that, when they are ready, they remember you.
What did boot camp teach me about stories?
In Marine Corps boot camp, each session began with stories about people who had acted bravely in earlier wars. The stories were not just history. They showed us that ordinary people had done hard things and that we could too. I learned that stories build belief and that people act on what they believe.
The same is true in your letters. Nobody cares how much you know until they know you care.
How do you tell a story in a letter or video?
A simple structure works: a person with a problem, you as a guide, a plan, and an outcome. The book Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller explains this well.
- Name the situation in the reader's words.
- Show that you understand how it feels.
- Explain what you did to help, in plain steps.
- Close with one clear next step.
What should you protect?
- Get written permission before sharing a client's story.
- Leave out names, addresses, and details that could identify anyone.
- Don't promise that someone else will get the same result.
- Say that results vary.
Try this week
- Write a 100-word story about a family you've helped, with no identifying details.
- Add one sentence that names how they felt at the start.
- End with one clear next step.
